The European Social Democrats

As president of the Party of European Socialists it is my job to make sure that our goal of constantly strengthening our influence on Europe's development is our top priority.

The members of the party are 32 different parties from 25 nations in the new Europe and Norway. It was founded in 1992. It happened after the adoption of the Maastricht Treaty, where we realized the need of having political parties at the European level. Since then our main priority has been to put a socialist and social democratic fingerprint on the development of the European Union. We wish to strengthen the socialists and social democratic network in all countries and spread the socialist and social democratic thoughts.

Another object of mine is to strengthen the relationship between the national parties, their groups in the national parliaments, the PES Group in the European Parliament and the Party of European Socialists.

Especially the last mentioned link - the relationship between the Party and the group in the European Parliament - takes a lot of my time. It is the first time in history that the President of the Party of European Socialist is a member of the European Parliament. I expect that I by having these two roles can contribute to making the PES Group in the European Parliament even stronger. It is necessary in order to ensure that Europe will follow our road and not the conservative or liberal one.
